On December 13, 2022, Paytm’s board of directors approved the buyback of its shares of up to Rs 850 crore at a maximum price of Rs 810 per share.
This was an insane premium of about 52% from its stock price at the time of the annoucement.
And as we have seen, this is after Paytm’s stock price had fallen by 75% since its IPO price of 2150Rs to 540Rs.
and as soon as this annoucment happened, it instigated a critical debate about Paytm’s value, business model and buyback strategy!!
