Is Apple Care+ Actually Worth It for the New iPhone 16? A Financial Breakdown

AppleCare+ is easiest to evaluate as insurance with a deductible, not as an accessory that automatically pays for itself. The right decision depends on how you use your iPhone 16, how likely you are to damage or lose it, how long you will keep it and what an unexpected repair would do to your budget.

Apple’s current India AppleCare page lists accidental-damage service fees of ₹2,500 for damaged displays or back glass and ₹8,900 for other accidental damage. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss can cover up to two theft or loss incidents per year, with a ₹15,900 service fee for a replacement claim; Apple says battery service is included when capacity falls below 80%. First, separate AppleCare+ from Theft and Loss

Standard AppleCare+ is primarily about accidental damage, service and support. Theft and Loss is a different risk: the phone disappears and you need a replacement under the plan’s conditions. Apple expanded Theft and Loss options in India in November 2025, with plans starting at ₹799, although the exact price depends on the eligible model and plan shown for your device. Do not compare a Theft and Loss plan with the price of a screen protector. They solve different problems.

The financial equation

Think of your expected annual cost as:

Expected cost without AppleCare+ = probability of a covered incident × likely repair or replacement cost.

Expected cost with AppleCare+ = plan cost + service fees you actually use.

This is not a prediction of what will happen to you. It is a decision framework. If you rarely drop your phone and have savings for a repair, self-insuring can be rational. If your phone is essential for work and a major repair would create immediate financial stress, the value of predictable service can be higher than the mathematical average.

Why the service fee matters

Suppose you damage the display or back glass and your plan applies a ₹2,500 service fee. The economic benefit is not simply the full repair price minus ₹2,500. You must also account for the AppleCare+ premium you paid before the incident. The more frequently you use covered repairs, the more valuable the plan becomes.

Conversely, if you keep the phone for two years without a covered incident, you have paid for risk protection that you never needed. That is normal for insurance; the goal is risk transfer, not guaranteed profit.

Who should seriously consider AppleCare+?

  • Heavy daily users: people whose phone travels everywhere and is constantly handled.
  • Field workers: users exposed to drops, rain, dust or crowded environments.
  • Business-critical users: people who cannot easily absorb downtime or an emergency repair bill.
  • Long-term owners: people planning to keep the phone well beyond the first year.
  • Users without a repair fund: people for whom an unexpected large bill would be disruptive.

Who may skip it?

A careful user with a case, sensible handling habits, emergency savings and a shorter upgrade cycle may reasonably decide against AppleCare+. The decision becomes stronger if the phone is rarely exposed to situations where accidental damage is likely.

Don’t ignore battery replacement value

Battery service can change the calculation for long-term owners. Apple states that if the iPhone battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity, replacement is covered under AppleCare+. That benefit matters more to someone keeping an iPhone for several years than to a buyer who expects to upgrade quickly. Apple India AppleCare

Theft and loss: calculate the risk separately

If losing your iPhone would create a major financial problem, Theft and Loss coverage deserves a separate calculation. Apple says eligible claims require Find My to be enabled at the time the device is lost or stolen and throughout the claim process. Apple India newsroom

Do not buy coverage solely because a phone is expensive. Ask whether the specific risk you are worried about is actually covered and what deductible applies.

Do you frequently drop or expose your phone to risk?Coverage becomes more valuable.
Will you keep the iPhone for several years?Battery and repair benefits matter more.
Do you upgrade quickly and handle the phone carefully?Self-insuring may make more sense.

Check your actual plan before buying

Apple says you can view AppleCare coverage from Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty, or through Apple’s support services. The exact plan availability, premium and terms should be checked for your specific device rather than copied from a generic comparison. Apple Support — Check AppleCare coverage

Bottom line

AppleCare+ is worth considering when you are buying predictable protection against a repair bill you would rather not absorb yourself. It is less compelling when you are a careful short-term owner with enough savings to self-insure. For an iPhone 16, make the decision using your actual plan price, the current service fees, your expected ownership period and the financial impact of a major accident—not the idea that insurance must either be a bargain or a waste.
