A Letter of Interest is a letter you write to introduce yourself to your target company, let them know you would like to work with them and inquire about potential job opportunities that match your skills and abilities. A Letter of Interest is sent to potential employers who currently have no listed job openings, unlike a cover letter. The purpose of the letter is to introduce yourself and to tell the recipient about your skills and abilities.

When writing a letter of interest, you should demonstrate how your abilities can benefit the company. If you are sending the letter, they know you want to work with them. Tell them why you should work with them.

Things to Keep in Mind When Writing a Letter of Interest

  • Do the Research. The first step in writing a letter of interest is research – you only thought you left that behind when you graduated! Research the company thoroughly. Focus your research on the people who work at the company. You need to know what skills and qualities the company values in their employees so that you can point to those skills and qualities in yourself.
  • Also, be sure you understand the company’s mission statement. What is the company’s primary goal? You need to understand the company ethos. Consider the qualities in yourself that would help your target company meet its primary goal.
  • Think about the person to whom you will address your letter. It can be the hiring manager or the manager of the department you have an interest in working with. Write your letter to the individual, not the title. Never write a letter of interest with the opening “To Whom It May Concern” – it might end up in the dust bin. Write to the person you know will have the ability to influence a hiring decision.
  • Inventory Your Skills and Abilities. Ask yourself what skills and abilities you have that match the company’s needs. It helps to make a list of your qualities and skills. Then think about how you can demonstrate these. What experience do you have that demonstrates the skill or quality you want to display? Do this with each skill and personal quality on your list.

What to Include in Your Letter

Remember, the point of the letter is to pitch yourself to your target company. Here is what you should include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • The skills you want to highlight
  • The personal qualities you want to highlight
  • Request for an informational interview
  • A show of gratitude
  • Attach a resume

Tip:  An informational interview allows you the opportunity to display your best qualities in person. If you haven’t heard from the company, call your contact or send a follow-up email. Stay proactive when pitching yourself. This ensures the contact keeps you in mind.

Dear Ms. Dunst:

I recently graduated with a degree in English from Elysium University. I have long valued the books and educational materials published by the Elysium University Press. I am writing to inquire whether you have any entry-level research or writing positions available.

I have employed my skills with the Elysium University’s student newspaper for the last four years, including two years as an editor. My research skills are impeccable, and I am frequently called upon to fact-check and perform in-depth research for long-term projects.

I am known for my attention to detail and strong editing skills. I strive for clear, concise, and informative work that interests the student body. I have maintained a personal blog for the past six years, in which I cover topics of emotional wellness and mindfulness.

My resume is enclosed. I have also included my recent article regarding the updated health and wellness policy at Elysium University. I would appreciate an opportunity to discuss how my skills can help Elysium University Press meet the mission of providing quality books and educational materials for attentive readers.

Thank you for your time and your careful consideration. I look forward to speaking with you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Vanderlyn
